To compliment the long-running
role-playing game, Wizards of the coast created a table-top collectable
miniatures game to further expand the Dungeons
and Dragons Universe.
The playing system is based on a simplified D20 system, which
is the combat system for 3rd Edition D&D. Players familiar with
hit points, armor class, and saving throws will find this game
almost second nature. The gaming system is the exact same one as
used in the Star Wars Miniature game, another product of Wizards
of the Coast.
Players collect and build a part of characters and monsters and
they pair off to do battle, using cardboard tiles to simulate a
dungeon. The characters, represented by plastic figurines, come
with a card that has the figures statistics.
Some of the most compelling features of the Dungeons and Dragons
miniature game is its similarity to the role-playing game and the
use of the D20 combat system. Traditional players of Dungeons and
Dragons can enjoy a quick, light-hearted game without pulling out
the tombs and manuals and filling out massive character sheets.
The miniature game is also an excellent avenue for competitive
play, in tournaments of with friends, unlike the role-playing game
which
is burdened with house rules and style of play.
An added bonus to the game is that the figurines are also able
to be used in the role playing game. The dungeons tiles and pre-painted
figurines are to scale with the traditional lead figurines of D&D
games of old. In addition, Wizards of the coast has printed the
role-playing statistics on the same stats card, enabling a Dungeon
master to quickly use the figurines without having to dig the creatures
out of a monster manual.
